Landscape Direction

Good landscapes begin with a clear direction.

makiko design studio works across private gardens,
commercial spaces and public landscapes,
always responding carefully to their surroundings.

Through close dialogue with clients, collaborators and site conditions,
we develop thoughtful concepts that are grounded,
purposeful and designed to mature over time —
from first ideas through to long-term direction.

With experience across Japan and the UK,

we bring an international perspective grounded in place.

01

Landscape Direction Consultation

You may be considering a change to your landscape,
but feel unsure where to begin.
Or you may already be in the midst of a project
and sense the need to pause and reflect.

This consultation is designed for those early,
transitional or uncertain stages.

By carefully reviewing site conditions, architectural plans,
budget and patterns of use,
we work together to clarify the landscape thinking

and direction that the project truly requires.

Consultation Includes

  • • Pre-session review of plans, images or background material
  • 90 minutes consultation session
  • Strategic recommendations and next steps
  • Follow-up summary notes
  • Online or in person by arrangement

Consultation fees are shared upon enquiry according to project type and location.

02
Landscape Concept & Design

Building on the direction established through consultation,
we look closely at the place itself —
its setting, purpose, and everyday life —
to develop a landscape concept and shape it into a clear, practical design.

With a clear focus on how the design will be realised,
we shape planting and spatial structure
as the foundation from which the landscape can emerge.

We focus on creating a framework for growth —
a landscape designed to mature and evolve over time.

03
Landscape Direction & Realisation

At this stage, the landscape moves from concept to site.
Through close involvement in construction and planting,
we ensure the design intent is clearly understood and carefully realised.

As work progresses,
we make measured adjustments on site, allowing the landscape to take shape
in alignment with the original design intent.

04
Ongoing Landscape Direction & Advisory

A landscape does not end at completion.

Through care, attention and time, the character of a place gradually emerges.

By responding to change as it occurs, we provide ongoing direction and advice,
supporting landscapes as they mature and remain coherent, purposeful
and well considered over time.

Wether you are beginning a new landscape,

refining an existing one, or seeking clarity at an early stage,

we would be pleased to discuss how we may help.
